Contaminant

Contaminant
Solo project for the Collective gallery
Edinburgh
2004

Contaminant was an installation in one room of the Collective gallery. A false wall, which curves from the floor to the ceiling, was built against the wall that the gallery shares with the next building up the hill, so that it seems that the wall is bowing into the gallery. Occassional sounds of drips and gurgles come from behind the wall. In the middle of the wall is a small brown streak, as though a falling drop has brushed the curved wall as it fell. On the ceiling another drop is forming; on the floor is a small splat. On the opposite wall are two texts. The first, On Contamination, addresses the artwork as contaminant. The second, On Containment, addresses writing, and its absence, in relation to art and the gallery.
